Practical tips
What to wear
- • Layer up: weather changes fast at 4,600m altitude.
- • Waterproof jacket and windbreaker are essential.
- • Gloves, beanie or buff (temps can drop to 0°C).
- • Trekking shoes with non-slip soles.
- • High-SPF sunscreen and sunglasses (strong UV at altitude).
- • Bring cash: no ATMs or cards accepted inside the park.
Where to eat
- • Tambopaxi Lodge: the only restaurant inside the park. Soup + main + juice (~$15). Cash recommended.
- • Local eateries in Machachi (on the way): affordable breakfast and snacks.
- • Pack snacks and water (at least 2L): the physical effort at altitude demands it.
Avoid this
- • Don't underestimate altitude sickness: drink water constantly and walk slowly.
- • Don't skip the warm layers even if it's sunny in Quito: the wind up there is biting.
- • Don't stray from the group near the refuge or snow trails.
- • Don't leave trash in the park: fines are steep.
- • Don't arrive without booking: the park has a daily visitor limit.
Cotopaxi route: frequently asked questions
How high does the Cotopaxi route go, and do I need to acclimatize first?
The hike to the José Ribas Refuge reaches 4,864 m (15,958 ft). It is a short but demanding walk at altitude, so we recommend at least one full day in Quito (2,850 m) before this route, drinking water constantly and walking slowly. The refuge hike is optional: you can stay at the viewpoint or the Limpiopungo Lagoon instead.
What is included in the $300 Cotopaxi private route?
A private SUV for 1 to 4 passengers, hotel pickup in Quito, your driver, and 5 curated stops with defined timing: the panoramic viewpoint and Mariscal Sucre Interpretation Center, Limpiopungo Lagoon, the hike to the José Ribas Refuge, lunch at Tambopaxi Lodge and a páramo wildlife photo stop. Park entrance fees, lunch and personal expenses are paid on-site.
How long is the Cotopaxi day trip from Quito?
10 to 11 hours door to door. We depart before 8am and return to Quito in the late afternoon.
What should I bring for Cotopaxi?
Warm layers, a waterproof jacket, gloves and a beanie (temperatures can drop to 0 °C), trekking shoes, high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, at least 2 liters of water and cash: there are no ATMs and cards are not accepted inside the National Park.
